Common questions
Do I need Making Tax Digital from April 2027?
From 6 April 2027, MTD for Income Tax is mandatory for self-employed people and landlords with combined gross income above £30,000. This includes both self-employment turnover and rental income added together. Use this checker to find out your exact mandate date.
Does rental income count toward the MTD threshold?
Yes. The MTD threshold is based on combined gross income from self-employment and property rental. If your self-employment turnover is £20,000 and your rental income is £15,000, your combined income is £35,000 and you will be mandated from April 2027.
What are the MTD quarterly deadlines?
Under MTD for Income Tax you submit four quarterly updates per year: 7 August (covering April to July), 7 November (August to October), 7 February (November to January), and 7 May (February to April). A Final Declaration replaces the annual Self Assessment return and is due by 31 January.
What software do I need for Making Tax Digital?
You need HMRC-approved MTD-compatible software to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates. HMRC maintains a full list of approved software at gov.uk. Options range from free tools for simple cases to full accounting packages for more complex finances.
Can I be exempt from Making Tax Digital?
Digital exclusion exemptions are available for people who cannot use digital tools due to age, disability, location or religious grounds. HMRC grants exemptions on application. If exempt, you continue to file annual Self Assessment returns as normal.
